The Prospective Livestock’s contribution to Sustainable Rural livelihood in semi arid zone in North Kordofan State, Sudan

Abstract

This study was conducted in Sheikan Arrehed and Um Rowaba Localities, North Kordofan State, in 2016 .The Main Objective of the study was to access livestock role in sustainable rural development in semi arid zone in North Kordofan State in Sudan. Livestock as in many developed and under developing country plays deferent raising elevator role in environmentally and ecologically sound approach to better safe sustainable rural development. Primary data was collected via questionnaire covering 120 households selected using cluster multi stage random sampling technique. The results showed that 81.6% farmers owned livestock The average household’s livestock ownership, growth rate was 50% for cows, 29% for sheep and 25% for goats. The average milk production was 2160, 90 and 361 liters for cows, sheep and goats respectively. The results showed that 59.2% of the respondents had the access to veterinary services, 59% of those who got veterinary services were from veterinary pharmacy, and 17.9% of them had vaccinated their herds. The findings revealed that the mortality rate was 50% goats, 29% sheep, and 29% cows. Livestock expenditure was 52% of total expenditure for watering, 24% for shepherd, 17% for supplementary feeding, 7% for veterinary care.  Livestock contribution was 10% to livelihood of rural household beside its contribution to the national domestic income was 60%.
