Abstract

This study investigates the risks faced by populations occupying unsuitable areas, particularly riverbanks, which naturally serve as flood expansion zones. Their subdivision directly exposes residents and dwellings to recurrent flooding, posing significant threats to both communities and the environment.

A mixed methodological approach was employed. Comparative analysis identified cases of landslides, housing destruction, waterborne diseases, and drownings across several urban districts. Analytical and descriptive methods were used to interpret field data and document observed events. Data collection relied on direct field observation, documentary review, and discussions. A drone was used to capture imagery of landslide-affected areas, while QGIS supported spatial mapping.

Findings reveal recurrent landslides, housing destruction, and waterborne diseases, confirming the major risks linked to unplanned occupation of flood-prone zones. Literature reviewed corroborates these results, validating the research hypothesis.
